Waking up to a late sunrise and a foggy morning with a hint of stale air can only mean one thing. The hot summer temperatures have passed and it’s time to enjoy the cool, fresh autumn air.
Make the most of the UAE winter this year by exploring the outdoors. The temperature drop is perfect for starting to plan your first hike of the year. Hiking in the fresh air will definitely breathe new life into your usual routine.
Mountain climbing for beginners can be scary, but it’s actually not that scary. You don’t need any special skills to climb. Plus, hiking is a great way to immerse yourself in nature, exercise and recharge. This not only increases your heart rate and works many muscles, but also helps reduce stress. If you are new to the world of climbing, we provide some tips and tricks to make your climbing safe and enjoyable.
Climbing Tips for Beginners:
Dos and Don’ts
- Don’t climb alone. Ask your friends or family to tag along and let others know where you’ll be climbing for safety reasons. Or better yet, find a group or club you can join. This is definitely a fun way to meet new people.
- Choose a trail that suits your current fitness level. If you choose a path that is well above your pay grade, you won’t enjoy it and may never climb again. You can check out our 5 Places To Hike In The UAE for a list of trails and details.
- Consider hiking poles to reduce pressure on your knees and thighs.
- Bring all the essential equipment, especially a first aid kit, power bank and GPS.
- Take short breaks every hour and stay hydrated. Bring at least 2 liters of water and some snacks, especially foods high in carbohydrates for energy. You can bring nuts & seeds, fruit, eggs, etc.
- Don’t push yourself beyond your limits. If it’s your first time trekking, shorten your trip and don’t stick to trails that are too difficult for you.
- Take care of the environment and don’t throw rubbish carelessly or disturb the surrounding environment (breaking branches, etc.).
Hatta Wadi Hub climbing route
The SSS content team explored the Hatta Wadi Hub hiking trail recently. Surrounded by the Hajar mountains, Hatta is a perfect spot for hiking. The route stretches for around 30km and is color coded by level of difficulty, offering something for runners and walkers of all abilities. You can book a hiking experience at Hatta Wadi Hub or simply explore on your own.
We climbed up to the famous Hatta sign. For my second climb in the UAE, the trail wasn’t too difficult for me. With average speed and few breaks, this trail is highly recommended for beginners. Since we were climbing with a large group, it took us approx. 3 hours to reach the top, with several hydration breaks in between.

You can also relax at Hatta Dam which is Instagrammable and has several amazing viewpoints. Or camp overnight in a lodge, trailer or luxury glamping resort if you decide to stay for the weekend.
